Lockheed Martin Receives $654 Million Contract

The U.S. Navy is awarding Lockheed Martin a contract valued at $654.9 million for fiscal year 2007 production and deployed system support for the Trident II D5 Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) program. 

Work under the contract will include D5 production support, including reentry system hardware, and operations and maintenance to support the readiness and reliability of missile systems, both deployed aboard FBM submarines and at on-shore facilities.

First deployed in 1990 and scheduled for operational deployment until 2042, the Trident II D5 is aboard 12 of an eventual 14 Trident II-configured Ohio-class submarines.  The three-stage, solid-propellant, inertial-guided ballistic missile has a nominal range of 4,000 nautical miles and carries multiple independently targeted reentry vehicles.

General Dynamics Awarded $77 Million Contract to Supply RG-31 Mk5 Mine Protected Vehicles to the U.S. Army

The U.S. Army Tank Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), in support of the Program Executive Office for Combat Support and Combat Service Support (PEO CS&CSS), has awarded a contract for US$76.5 million to General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada to provide 169 RG-31 Mk5 Mine Protected Vehicles, with an option for nine additional vehicles. General Dynamics Land Systems, the Canadian company’s parent corporation, is a business unit of General Dynamics.

The contract was signed through the Canadian Commercial Corporation, a Crown Agency of the Canadian Government. Under this contract, General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada will provide the program management while BAE Land systems OMC of South Africa will manufacture the vehicles. Deliveries will occur from June 2007 to January 2008.

The RG-31 Mk5 is the latest version of the highly successful RG-31 vehicle family. The Mk5 delivers a significant increase in power and payload to meet emerging requirements. In service with forces around the world, the RG-31 is a highly effective multi-role armored vehicle capable of a variety of military applications. Offering enhanced mine blast resistance, as well as protection against both improvised explosive devices and ballistic threats, these vehicles will be used by the U.S. Army in support of ongoing activities.

In October 2006, TACOM awarded General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada a contract for US$27.2 million to provide 60 RG-31 Mk5 vehicles. In November 2006 this order was increased to 94 vehicles for an additional US$15.4 million.

Raytheon Receives $60 Million in Contracts for Standard Missile-1 Support Services

Raytheon Company has been awarded two contracts to perform support services for the Standard Missile-1 (SM-1) program for international customers.

The most recent contract, valued at $29 million, was awarded Jan. 3.

Work includes missile assembly, testing and delivery for the governments of Spain and Egypt.

An earlier contract, valued at $31.8 million, was awarded Nov. 13, 2006. Work includes regraining of MK-56 dual-thrust rocket motors and SM-1 Block VIA missile assembly, testing and delivery. The countries serviced under this contract are France, Japan, Turkey, Bahrain, Poland, Italy and Chile.

SM-1 support work will be performed in Tucson, Ariz., Camden, Ark., and Sacramento, Calif.

SM-1 is a medium-to-long range fleet-defense missile. The SM-1 missile is operational in the ships of multiple coalition navies, and Raytheon has been selected by the U.S. Navy to provide SM-1 support.

Alcatel-Lucent Completes its Acquisition of Nortel’s UMTS Radio Access Business

Representatives of Alcatel-Lucent announced Monday that, after all regulatory approval have been met, the acquisition of Nortel’s UMTS radio access business (UTRAN) and related assets has been completed on December 31, 2006. In recent weeks, the two companies have achieved a number of significant milestones, the most important being the signature of the definitive agreement on December 4, 2006.

Nortel received a closing cash payment of US$320 million less significant deductions not released. With this acquisition, one in four UMTS operators – about 40 customers around the world – use Alcatel-Lucent UMTS solutions.

Cisco Completes Acquisition of Tivella, Inc

On January 9, representatives of Cisco announced it has completed the acquisition of privately-held, Tivella, Inc. of Half Moon Bay, Calif. Tivella is a leading provider of digital signage software and systems. Cisco sees enormous potential for digital signage to be integrated into its existing enterprise streaming and live video broadcasting platform.

Digital signage is an emerging technology that has the potential to transform the customer experience and to promote richer communications. Digital signage is quickly gaining traction as companies face a variety of challenges. These include revenue and growth, building and maintaining brand identity and customer loyalty, and effectively reaching target audiences with advertising and marketing. Companies conducting deployments of digital signage solutions have clearly demonstrated higher brand awareness and sales uplift by targeting relevant information to an audience near the point of purchase.

With the close of the transaction, the Tivella team and product portfolio are now integrated into the Cisco's Emerging Markets Technology Group, reporting into Marthin De Beer, Senior Vice President of Cisco's Emerging Market Technologies Group.

Ericsson to Establish China Program Together with the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden

Ericsson and the Stockholm School of Economics have agreed to create a program aiming to generate in-depth knowledge of Chinese business and economics and China's impact on global trade patterns. The program will create a base for a unique competence center in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Ericsson China program comprises several components designed to support the capacity of Sweden to follow developments in China, strengthen Swedish-Chinese relations in economics, business and research and its impact on the world economy. The program embraces economic and business research, education, seminars and conference programs as well as advice.

The program will start January 1, 2007 with Ericsson and the Stockholm School of Economics as co-founders. The program is guided by an advisory board consisting of representatives from Ericsson, the Stockholm School of Economics and the China Center for Economical Research at Peking University.

The program will be based at the Stockholm School of Economics, which is one of Europe's leading institutes for education and research in business and economics. The program will cooperate closely with the China Center for Economical Research at Peking University, China's leading institute in economics and economic policy research.

Dyneon to Acquire Empore Solid Phase Extraction Family of Products

Dyneon LLC, a 3M company and one of the world’s leading fluoropolymer producers, recently announced that it will acquire 3M’s Bioanalytical Technologies business, including the Empore solid phase extraction family of products, effective Jan. 1, 2007. The Bioanalytical Technologies business and Empore products will be integrated into Dyneon and will augment Dyneon’s fluoroplastics, fluoroelastomers and specialty additives lines, and provide new opportunities for growth for the Empore family of products.

According to Bill Myers, president and general manager, Dyneon, this strategic move builds on the synergies between Dyneon products and Empore products. Both businesses manufacture high-performance materials that demand technological precision and innovation, as well as an excellent customer service and support base.

The Empore family of products, first commercialized in the 1980s, is widely used by chemists for environmental and pharmaceutical analysis.

Empore products joins a diverse range of products at Dyneon. Dyneon fluoroelastomers are engineered to meet many of the most demanding sealing challenges, providing long-term protection against high temperatures and corrosive chemicals. Its fluoroplastics, including PFA, FEP, ETFE, HTE, THV and PVDF, can be processed in extrusion, injection, compression, transfer and blow molding. Dyneon’s specialty additives, including Dynamar polymer processing additives, are fluoropolymer-based products that improve various processing aspects of thermoplastic resin. Dyneon also is a global leader in PTFE compounding, providing a host of standard compounds, as well as expertly formulated custom compounds.
