First-Year Leaders

Linda Bi

Senior from Frisco, Texas (originally from China)
Economics

Do you live on campus? Yes. My favorite part of living on my own is freedom and control over your own affairs. You are responsible for and accountable to only yourself.

List some of the clubs or organizations you are involved in at UT Dallas.
Economics Club, Destination Imagination, Alternative Spring Break, Collegium V and Quiz Bowl.

List some clubs or organizations you are involved in outside of school. I tutor at Literacy Instruction of Texas and I tutor in the Dallas Independent School District.

List some of your hobbies. Tennis, racquetball and most other sports.

Something that people may not know about me. I’ve skydived.

Why did you decide to become a First-Year Leader?
I became a FYL to give freshmen a good first impression of UT Dallas, to share my school pride and to meet new people.

What advice do you have for the freshman class coming into UT Dallas?
Attend everything in your freshmen year! Go to club meetings, to SUAAB events, to RHA events, to Meteor Theater (and anywhere else with free food), because after freshmen year, you will be swamped with school work and won’t have so many chances to just have fun.

What do you like about UT Dallas?
I love the fact that UT Dallas is central in nanotechnology research, brain and behavioral science and so much more. Also, we have so many professors who are famous in their circles and have accomplished so much during their lifetimes. The professors here are the best resource for networking, career advice and graduate school advice.

Why did you decide to attend UT Dallas?
Opportunities for research, internships and study abroad. (All made the better by scholarships that take care of the expenses!)

What has been your favorite/best UT Dallas experience so far?
Class-wise: Business and Technology with Professor Donald Hicks.
Extracurricular: Alternative Spring Break Trip 2007, Destination Imagination Global tournament, Cardboard Boat Regatta.

What did you learn about college life that you didn’t know before?
In college, I’ve had more meaningful interactions with people and really come to understand their strengths, shortcomings, doubts and aspirations. Some relationships in college are very different from hanging out and chatting with friends in high school.

What do you like to do to unwind after class?
Watch and make fun of cheesy movies with my roommates.
