First-Year Leaders

Blake Farha

Senior from Mesquite, TX

Do you live on campus and what do you like about living on your own?
Yes. I like the fact that I’m not far from any events on campus or any of my friends from UT Dallas.

List some of the clubs or organizations you are involved in at UT Dallas.
Meteor Theater, Intramural Sports and First-Year Leaders.

List some of your hobbies.
Playing guitar, writing music, acting, working out and being lazy with my friends.

Something that people may not know about me.
I have an unhealthy obsession with The Beatles, and my normal talking voice is absurdly loud.

Why did you decide to become a First-Year Leader?
I wanted to use my experience as a college student to help the incoming freshmen make the most of their time in college and help to bond them with their peers.

What advice do you have for the freshmen class coming to UT Dallas?
Get involved. The best way to meet people is to join an organization that interests you because it will link you to people with similar interests and give you something to rally around.

What do you wish you did during your freshmen year that you didn’t?
I wish I had gotten involved in something. I spent every waking moment studying, and while it left me with a pretty good GPA, it left me with a very small circle of friends.

What do you like about UT Dallas?
It’s a small and young university where it is easy to make a big difference. If you don’t like the way things are, or if you want to make a new organization, you can actually have voice enough here to do something about it.

Why did you decide to attend UT Dallas?
I was given a scholarship that I couldn’t turn down.

What has been your favorite/best UT Dallas experience so far?
Playing guitar and singing at University Idol. I managed to get the entire crowd to sing along in unison to a rendition of “Hey Ya” by Outkast, and I felt like I got to experience what it’s like to be a rock star for four whole minutes.

What did you learn about college life that you didn’t know before?
It’s nothing like the movies. In a lot of ways it’s much better than it is in the movies, but friends don’t usually just come to you like they do in the movies, and you have to study a lot more than actors, too.

What do you like to do to unwind after class?
I like to unwind with coffee and conversation with my friends, or by working out. If nothing else, I’ll just listen to music or play my guitar as loudly as I can, much to the chagrin of my roommates.

Other info you’d like to contribute.
College is an absolute blast as long as you keep an open mind.
