Shanica Pompey

Senior, born in Chicago but raised in Dallas

Do you live on campus? If yes, what do you like about living on your own?
Yes, and I like the freedom to truly make my own decisions and learn from my mistakes.

List some of the clubs or organizations you are involved in at UT Dallas.
Black Student Alliance, Comet S.T.A.R.S. Mentor Program, Perpetual Praise Gospel Choir, I.D.E.A.L. Women.

List some of the clubs or organizations you are involved with outside of school.
I am a Bible worker, youth ministries assistant and a member of Total Praise Youth Choir, all at City Temple Seventh-day Adventist Church.

List some of your hobbies.
Playing the piano, drawing, painting, graphic design, visual art, singing, watching animae, playing video games and working out.

List something unique about yourself.
I am left-handed, a visual artist and I play the piano by ear.

Why did you decide to become a First-Year Leader?
I believe that mentorship is key to the development of a mature and confident individual. The idea of an upperclassman closely interacting with freshmen, acting as both an authority figure and mentor, greatly excites me. I want to pass on what I have learned to others!

What advice do you have for the freshman class coming into UT Dallas?
Get involved! This campus has so much to offer. However, the beauty of the campus is that it is relatively young and rapidly growing, allowing everyone a chance to leave their mark. If you don’t like it, change it; if we don’t have it, start it!

What do you wish you did during your freshman year that you didn’t?
I wish I had lived on campus freshman year. Because I lived so far away (and without a car), I missed out on a lot of social, academic and volunteer opportunities. Everything is fine now, but I did have a slow start.

What do you like about UT Dallas?
The aspect I most enjoy about UT Dallas is the diversity of ethnicity and culture on campus. This has allowed me to learn and grow in ways I never thought possible.

Why did you decide to attend UT Dallas?
Originally, I came to UT Dallas because it was close to home and I was granted a scholarship. However, after attending orientation, I became excited about the rigorous curriculum and cultural diversity the campus had to offer.

What has been your favorite/best UT Dallas experience so far?
My best experience has been working with the Multicultural Center on campus and being a part of the Black Student Alliance.

What did you learn about college life that you didn’t know before?
People come in a lot of different flavors, and that’s the beauty of humanity.

What do you like to do to unwind after class?
I go and hang out at the Multicultural Center on campus, located in the Conference Center. Try it - it’s great!
