Our Mission

The Department of Science/Mathematics Education strives to have a positive and lasting impact on the quality of STEM education in North Texas and beyond. Our approach is to recruit, prepare and support excellent STEM educators and to guide PK-16 and higher students toward success in formal and informal STEM educational experiences.

Our mission is accomplished through a mixture of academic programs that include teacher preparation and enhancement, high-quality content-rich professional development for teachers and educational leaders, educational outreach, partnerships within UT Dallas and the broader educational community, and active research and creative activity in STEM and STEM teaching and learning.

Academic Programs

The academic programs of UTeach Dallas and the Master of Arts in Teaching Programs in Science Education and Mathematics Education seek to recruit and nurture outstanding STEM teachers with strong content knowledge, research-based teaching and communications skills and leadership ability.

Professional Development

SME faculty and alumni provide dozens of workshops for teachers every year.  Offerings include workshops and short courses at national, state, and local teacher conferences, special offerings at UTD, workshops in local schools, and the Regional Education Service Centers. UTeach Dallas Induction is also held for our pre-service teacher graduates to support them in their first three years of service in the local school districts.

Outreach

WiP Physics Camp for Middle School Girls is always the first two weeks of June, Advanced Camp followed by Beginners Camp. Applications are posted in mid-spring for Beginners Physics Camp. Previous campers are invited to Advanced Camp.

Comet Chemistry Camp dates will be later in the summer. Application information is posted in late-spring.
