WHO MAKES UP "THE SUBDUCTION CREW"?

Lots of folks!

This leg of the R/V Melville Research Cruise (Guam-Guam, March 4-April 12, Bloomer & Stern, co-chief scientists, sponsored by the National Science Foundation) includes an important science education component. Dr. Homer Montgomery, Assistant Professor - Science/Mathematics Education at UTD, will also participate in the cruise. Two 8th grade science teachers, Katy Myrick (Garland ISD) and Rick Ford (Keller ISD) will join the scientific crew for the entire 6 week leg, which will be devoted to surveying and sampling the southern Mariana arc and back-arc basin system as part of the NSF MARGINS initiative/Subduction Factory experiment. Montgomery, Myrick, and Ford will participate as 'normal' members of the scientific crew, standing watch, etc., and will communicate with the UTD School of Natural Sciences & Mathematics land-based team to share their learning experiences.

Throughout the cruise, the participation of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the University of Hawaii (Hawaii MR-1), Oregon State University, and The University of Texas at Dallas will be highlighted, along with the support of the National Science Foundation.

While the Science/Mathematics Education activities will be noticed much aboard ship, The Subduction Crew website will have a huge impact on land — bringing a bit of the science and shipboard experience to classrooms around the globe.
