Teacher Enhancement Academy in Mathematics and Science
TEAMS 2009-2011 MAT in Science Education, MAT in Mathematics Education
Thanks to a generous grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, UT Dallas is able to provide two years of professional development in science and mathematics and science and mathematics education for up to 25 secondary school science or mathematics teachers at no cost to the teachers. Participating teachers will be able to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching in Science Education or Mathematics Education within a two-year period beginning in August 2009 (including the summers of 2010 and 2011). The grant will cover all tuition costs and most of the costs of instructional materials. The Academy consists of course work and a Learning Academy Seminar, which will meet for one hour bi-weekly for the duration of the program. The UT Dallas Teacher Enhancement Academy in Mathematics and Science (UT Dallas TEAMS) is a collaborative effort among The University of Texas at Dallas, the Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Dallas, Garland, Plano and Richardson Independent School Districts to enhance the expertise of teachers in science and mathematics content and pedagogy by providing an innovative and rigorous program in science and mathematics education. Preference will be given to teachers from the collaborating school districts but teachers from other districts are welcome to apply. Successful applicants must meet the following criteria:
- be a certified secondary mathematics or science teacher;
- have a minimum of five (5) years teaching experience in mathematics and/or science;
- be recommended by their districts to participate in the program. (The school districts will be asked to contribute a one-time fee of $1,000 for each participant but acceptance into the program does not depend on the contribution.)
- commit to serving in their districts or a high-need district for a minimum of two (2) years after completing the Academy; and
- agree to participate in all aspects of the Academy, including Learning Academy Seminars and program evaluation.
