Robotics Teacher Training

Description:

The Science and Engineering Education Center (SEEC) is rapidly becoming the destination for Robotics Competitions in North Texas. SEEC at UT Dallas hosts qualifying events and provides professional development opportunities for teachers and coaches for FIRST LEGO League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and BEST Robotics. We also are the host for Texas BEST, the largest robotics competition in the North Texas area.

This summer we would like to invite teachers and coaches who are interested in learning how to use robots in their classrooms or how to coach a robotics team to participate in two, week long training sessions, Middle School Robotics with LEGO Mindstorms and Secondary Robotics with Tetrix.

During the workshop teachers and coaches will learn the technical aspects of putting a robot together and programming it. You will also learn how to teach with robots. There are a growing number of studies on how robotics supports Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teaching. You will learn how robots can be used to teach algebra, geometry, physics, biology, technology and design. Robots provide a unique opportunity to integrate the teaching of all the STEM subjects. Much of our time in both courses will be devoted to exploring ways to use robots as a theme for teaching STEM subjects.

Dr. Kenneth Berry is an expert in robots in the classroom. He has written several articles and a frequent contributor to Robot magazine, and he was the primary author and developer of the Boy Scouts of America Robot Merit Badge. He has been working with robots in competitions and in the classroom for over 12 years.
