Commitment, Responsibility, Service: These are the foundational principles upon which our research and training efforts are built.
The UTD SCDRC came into existence on August 1, 2001 with the primary goal of establishing biomedical research programs to develop a gene therapy cure for sickle cell disease. As of September 1, 2004, Dr. Betty Pace, formerly the associate director of SCDRC and associate professor of molecular and cell biology, became its director.
The mission in the Sickle Cell Disease Research Center is to actively and aggressively participate in the development of basic research and training efforts to improve treatment options and to discover a cure for sickle cell disease. The center seeks to specifically address the unique issues and challenges surrounding genetic diseases affecting the general public and protection of privacy.
UTD SCDRC researchers participate in collaborative projects with faculty at several academic institutions including UT Southwestern Medical Center, UT Arlington, University of Kansas, MD Anderson Cancer Center and Yale University.
