Summer Institute Program to Increase Diversity in Health-Related Research
The Sickle Cell Disease Research Center-Summer Institute Program to Increase Diversity (SCDRC-SIPID) will fund summer institutes and mentoring opportunities to enable ten participants from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups to further develop their research skills and knowledge, thereby enhancing their career development as faculty members and scientists. The program will be consistent with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) efforts to diversify the biomedical workforce and ensure:
- the recruitment of the most talented researchers from all groups
- an improvement in the quality of the educational and training environment
- a more balanced perspective in the determination of research priorities
- an improved capacity to address and eliminate health disparities
Community Outreach Training and Education Program (COTE)
To purpose of the COTE program is to develop service provider training and health education information necessary to improve services to hard-to-reach patients being treated for chronic pain
Objectives: 1) To identify hard-to- reach patients and families affected with a chronic illness complicated by pain, 2) to use a focus group approach to survey and identify the best method of communicating health information to patients who are considered hard-to-reach and 3) to demonstrate to healthcare providers communication techniques that can empower hard-to-reach patients to participate in self-care.
Rationale: Accomplishing the objectives as outlined above will allow the SCDRC to develop a model for training physicians, nurses, case managers, and other service providers to increase their understanding of the complex problems involved in caring for individuals with a chronic pain including the prevailing psychological and social impact.
