SIPID - Functional Genomics of Blood Disorders

Apply for the Program

The study of the red blood cell disorders using interdisciplinary functional genomics approaches has become the standard, now that we are well into the human genome era. To ensure the diversity of future scientists in the US, we have recruited teaching faculty from complimentary areas of expertise and leaders in the red blood cell field as Mentors; junior-level faculty Mentees will learn to conduct competitive bench research and strategies for academic advancement. This innovative, all-expense-paid training program will foster a unique learning environment and provide Mentees access to cutting-edge techniques.

Program Description

Two-week summer institutes will be held each year of a 2-year program (See SIPID Curriculum). Travel to the Mentor’s laboratory during the winter will also be supported to promote research collaboration, grant preparation and career planning.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Absolutely committed to a long-term academic research career,
  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident,
  • Clinical or basic researcher  at the junior-level faculty scientist at an accredited institution in the United States (instructor, assistant professor, or equivalent). Selection will be based on merit while considering the potential of each individual to increase diversity in the work force on a national or institutional basis.

If you do not meet one of the three requirements listed above then you are not eligible for this program.

Prerequisites

To benefit most from the Institute, applicants with prior experience in clinical or basic research approaches and techniques respectively are preferred.

Benefits

For the 2-year SIPID program grants funds will cover the following expenses.

Stipend: provisions have been made to pay Mentees a stipend of $2,000.00 per summer to enhance productivity in independent research programs established at their institution.

Housing: will be provided on the UT Dallas campus in student/faculty housing. One bedroom apartments with basic furnishings will be provided to each participant. There will a limited number of 2-bedroom apartments made available for participants desiring to bring family during the institute, but this option is discouraged. Mentees with disabilities will be accommodated based on their needs.

Meals: $300.00 will be awarded to each participant for meals during the 2-week institute.

Transportation: will be provided for the two summer institutes and mid-winter Mentor visits, most likely in the form of airfare for all trainees and ground transportation to and from the airport. Convenient shopping and entertainment is available as well by public transportation. If a Mentee wishes to drive to the Summer Institute arrangements for parking and mileage reimbursement will be made.
