Student Organization Manual

Dear Comets,

On behalf of The University of Texas at Dallas, I commend you on your decision to become involved in student organizations. The range and diversity of student organizations on campus reflects the rich community that is UT Dallas. As a student organization leader you are an essential part of that community. Involvement in a student organization will bring you additional learning opportunities outside the classroom and will create opportunities for friendship and support. You will also gain valuable leadership skills and professional preparation through your experience.

Involvement in a student organization will bring you additional learning opportunities outside the classroom and will create opportunities for friendship and support.

The Dean of Students Office, and, in particular, the Student Organization Center, is committed to making your experience as meaningful and rewarding as possible. The SOC exists as a staff, resource center, and facility to support the work and activities of students. We welcome your presence. Please let us know how we can make student organizations even more successful and well-run than they already are.

In your role as a student organization member or leader you are expected to uphold certain responsibilities and policies that the SOC and the university have in place. The information in this manual is intended to guide you in policies related to student organization activities, but there are other resources you should become familiar with, including Regents Rules of The University of Texas System. SOC staff can assist you in interpreting these important documents which may be found on the web at www.utdallas.edu/deanofstudents.

I am indebted to Dr. Mary Beth Mercatoris, Assistant Dean of Students, and her staff at The University of Texas at Austin’s Student Activities and Leadership Development Center for tremendous assistance and support with this manual. Significant portions of the manual were adapted from UT Austin’s edition. You will see other institutions and resources cited in the manual and those contributions are greatly appreciated.

Special thanks to the officers of the Student Organization Forum (SOF) and the SOF working group for their valuable assistance in the preparation of the manual. In particular, Shweta Arya, the current President of SOF gave generously of her time towards the successful completion of the manual.

Best wishes in all your educational endeavors at UT Dallas.
