Mandatory Risk Management Training
Effective September 1, 2007, the 80th Texas Legislature enacted HB 2639/SB1138, adding section 51.9361 to the Texas State Education Code regarding risk management training and advisors of student organizations at post secondary educational institutions.
The law requires that officers of recognized student organizations be trained in 7 different areas of risk management annually. These areas include:
- Possession and use of alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs, including penalties that may be imposed for possession or use.
- Hazing.
- Sexual abuse and harassment.
- Fire safety and other safety issues, including the possession and use of a firearm or other weapon or of an explosive device.
- Travel to a destination outside the area in which the institution is located.
- Behavior at parties and other events held by student organization.
- Adoption by a student organization of a risk management plan

VERIFICATION OF ATTENDANCE AT THE TRAINING MUST BE KEPT FOR AT LEAST THREE YEARS.
Mandatory Training Dates:
Officers and advisors must attend ONE of the risk management meetings listed below. If your advisor already attended Risk Management Training last year, only (2) officers are required to attend one of the meeting dates.
Spring Risk Management Training Dates:
Check-in Time: 12:30 - 1:00 PM February 6th at 12:00 - 3:00 PM Check-in Time: 11:30 - 12:00 PM Location: Student Union Galaxy Rooms 2.602 Spring Risk Managment Training is for student organizations that are new or did not bring 2 officers and an advisor to Risk Managment Training in the fall.

*Please understand that all attendees must stay the duration of the training session. Early departure will not fulfill the risk management requirement.
After Risk Management Training, organization officers can access the Managing the Risks PowerPoint. The officers will present the Risk Management PowerPoint to their organization members during their next general meeting.
The Certification Form, general meeting attendance sheet, and Risk Management Plan should be returned to: The Center for Student Involvement (SU 2.506) no later than Friday, March 5th by 12pm. NO EXCEPTIONS
