Immigration Advising
The UT Dallas ISSO offers students a variety of advising services. The following information is provided to help you select the type of advising that will be most beneficial to you:
ISSO Website – Anytime
There is a lot of information available on the ISSO website! You can find detailed information about how many credit hours are required each semester, how to update your I-20, how to get a Social Security card, CPT, OPT, request forms and more!
Best method for:
- Getting acquainted with work authorizations
- Basic information on any F-1 visa requirement or benefit
- Checking travel requirements, full-time enrollment options
- Accessing forms for fax or email requests
E-Advising - ISSOCurrent@utdallas.edu - Anytime
The ISSOCurrent email board is answered daily by ISSO international student advisors. Most emails are answered within 24 hours (business days).
Best method for:
- General questions
- Application procedures
- Inquiries about requests and replying to advisor emails
Walk-in Advising - M-TH 10:30-5:00; F 10:30-4:00
An international student advisor is “on call” for student questions each week day during posted advising hours. Walk-in students are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. In an effort to keep student wait times to a minimum, walk-in meetings are limited to a maximum of 15-20 minutes in most cases.
Best method for:
- Student-specific issues (e.g. work eligibility, reduced course load, early withdrawal, etc.)
- Complex questions
- Urgent concerns
Advising by Appointment - M-TH 11:00-12:00, 4:30-5:30; F 11:00-12:00, 3:30-4:30
Two international student advisors meet students each day for a total of four 30-minute appointments. Appointments can be in-person or on the phone.
Best method for:
- Change of status and reinstatement discussions
- Advanced immigration issues
- Students working who cannot come to the ISSO
- Students with long lists of questions
Brochures and Handouts - During office hours – Standard hours M-TH 9:00-6:30; F 9:00-5:00 Summer hours M-TH 9:00-6:00, F 9:00-5:00
The ISSO provides a number of free publications containing helpful information on topics such as visa renewal, Social Security and obtaining a driver’s license.
