Extension of Stay for F-1 Students
[All information is subject to change without notice.]
F-1 students are required to complete their academic programs within an estimated period of time, as listed on their I-20s. If an F-1 is not able to complete their program within this period of time, he/ she may apply for an extension of stay.
In order to be eligible for an extension of F-1 stay, you must meet the following criteria:
- You must be currently maintaining status and making normal progress toward completing your educational objective.
- You must meet one of the valid Immigration Service reasons for extension, including: compelling academic reasons (such as a change of major, research topics or research complications) or documented medical reasons (such as hospitalization or prolonged illness). Delays caused by academic probation, suspension, or participation in the Curricular Practical Training are not valid reasons for a program extension.
- The expiration date on your I-20 must be approximately 30 days from the date of application. The latest date to apply is seven days before the expiration date.
I-20 Extension Application Process

- An updated financial affidavit.

- Five to seven business days later, come to the ISS Office to pick up your new I-20 with the I-20 extension date.
