Taxes
All F and J visa holders are required by the U.S. government to file forms with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) annually, even if you did not earn any income. The UT Dallas ISS Office has assembled the following resources to assist you:
- For an overview of the U.S. tax system and basic tax information, see the tax brochure.
- Before you file your taxes, make sure you have all your documents (W-2, 1042S, etc.) If you received a scholarship/fellowship, or are claiming tax treaty benefits, you will be provided a 1042-S form from UT Dallas by March 15. Do not begin filing your tax return until you have received your 1042-S.
- For help in preparing your U.S. tax return, we highly recommend the UT Austin tax website. Developed specially to assist non-immigrants with tax compliance, this interactive website provides you with:
- Step by step instructions that enable you to complete your taxes accurately and completely on your own.
- Downloadable tax forms that you will need to complete the tax process.
- The UT Dallas ISS Office provides a Tax Workshop for F and J students each spring. See our events page for details or e-mail ISSOPrograms@utdallas.edu..
- If you need further assistance outside of what the UT Austin tax website provides, you can contact the IRS directly for free tax assistance or pay for the services of a tax accountant or tax attorney.
