International Student Services

Withdrawal from Classes

Students who will not enroll in classes for a long semester (fall or spring) because they will be outside of the United States must notify the UT Dallas International Student Services office PRIOR TO LEAVING THE U.S. to remain in good immigration standing. If you leave the United States without contacting a UT Dallas international student advisor and you do not enroll in courses, your F-1 immigration status will be terminated. This could negatively affect future visa applications and travel.

Procedure to notify the ISSO

  1. Contact an international student advisor prior to your departure to discuss impact on your F-1 status.
  2. Once flight arrangements are made, provide a copy of your E-ticket, paper ticket or boarding pass to an international student advisor.
  3. With proper notification and documentation, the ISSO will notify the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that you left the U.S. in good immigration standing.  Note:  If you wish to re-enter the United States you will need to contact the ISSO for a new I-20 with new dates.
  4. Special Registration students must also follow U.S. departure instructions listed in the walk-away materials supplied to the student upon initial entry to the U.S.

For more information, please contact an international student advisor.

NOTE: There are additional academic, financial and housing procedures required to withdraw from UT Dallas in good academic and financial standing. Contact the appropriate UT Dallas offices to address those areas.
