Visa Information

Students Applying for a J-1 student visa outside the U.S.

If you have been admitted to UT Dallas and you are applying for your J-1 visa in your home country, this is the section for you.  Please read below the steps to take to obtain your UT Dallas DS-2019.

    1. Compile the following documents:

    • Sponsorship Letter.   The sponsorship letter must verify your funding source as government funds.  The statement should not be more than six months old at the time of enrollment at UTD.
    • DS-2019 Request form.  Please download this form.
    • Immigration documents.  Please provide a copy of the identification page in your passport (showing photo and expiration date).

2.2. There is not a deadline to submit your documents to the ISSO for DS-2019 issuance. It is to your advantage to submit your documents as early as possible so your DS-2019 can be issued and you can apply for your visa. You may send your documents to the ISSO by email or by fax.

      • email to ISSOProspective@utdallas.edu.  Before emailing, please verify that the total of your attachments is no larger than 5MB. Do not send files in compressed formats, such as .rar or .zip. Instead, use a PDF, JPEG or DOC format.
      • fax to 972-883-4010

    3. Wait 2 – 3 business days to receive an email saying your DS-2019 has been issued.  You will then be given the option of express mail.  If you do not receive this email within one week, contact the UT Dallas ISSO at ISSOProspective@utdallas.edu.

    4. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.

    5. Once you have your passport, DS-2019, and have paid your SEVIS I-901 fee make an appointment with the United States Embassy or Consulate most convenient for you. You will apply for a J-1 visa, and any spouse or child that will accompany you to the United States will apply for a J-2 visa.
