RESOLUTION IN OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED ORDINANCE TO
LIMIT CONSUMPTION OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS
AT ESTABLISHMENTS IN THE CITY OF RICHARDSON
WHEREAS The University of Texas at Dallas has over fourteen thousand students enrolled as of Summer 2008, including more than two thousand international students; AND
WHEREAS, according to a survey of nearly four thousand UT-Dallas students in October 2007, 21.1% of students use tobacco products on a monthly basis, with 11.9% using them three or more times per week; AND
WHEREAS the students of UT-Dallas come from diverse cultural backgrounds and, for many, smoking hookah is a traditional practice; AND
WHEREAS hookah has become increasingly popular among young people age eighteen to thirty; AND
WHEREAS most hookah bars are not exclusively tobacco retailers;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Student Senate of The University of Texas at Dallas urges the City of Richardson not to adopt any smoking ordinance that would ban smoking in establishments, such as hookah bars, with a significant source of revenue derived from the sale or consumption of tobacco products.
