Mathematics Placement Testing

Mathematics placement testing is offered through the Learning Resources Center at UTD.  All questions regarding math placement testing should be directed to that office.  Their phone number is 972-883-6707.

All students who intend to take precalculus, applied calculus, or calculus I must qualify for admission to the class based on their performance on the SAT II math tests or other credit by examination.  On the second day of Freshman Orientation, the Learning Resource Center will administer both the SAT II Mathematics Subject Tests IC and IIC.  Students wishing to enter precalculus must attain a score of 460 on the SAT II IC test.  To enter applied calculus, a student must score at least 480 on the SAT II IC.  For Calculus I admission, students must score at least 630 on either the SAT IC or IIC tests.

Registration information for math placement testing is located in the Orientation & Freshman Programs booklet. To print off and mail in a registration form, please click here: Math Placement Registration Form.

NOTE:  Calculators are not provided for the math placement test.  You must supply your own calculator.  Please refer to the SAT - Calculator Policy for calculators that are permissible: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/testday/calc.html.  You must also bring a government issued photo I.D. and two number 2 pencils to the test.

Absolutely NO cell phones or PDAs will be allowed in the testing room.

Exemptions:

  • SAT The 2007 SAT has new score ranges. New ranges will be posted once THECB announces the requirements as they relate to TSI/THEA.
  • ACT Composite score of 23 with minimum score on both the English and Math of 19.
  • Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) with a minimum scale score of 2200 on the Math section, 2200 on the English Language Arts with a written composition rating of 3.
  • If students do not meet the minimum requirements in each subject area, they may not be able to register and may need the THEA placement test.

Important THEA Test Information:

  • "The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requires students to be assessed in reading, writing, and math skills prior to enrolling in college, and to be advised based on the results of that assessment. In addition, each student who does not pass must have an individualized education plan, and those students who score below a deviation standard are required to retest."

UTD requires incoming students who are not TSI exempt to take the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA), formerly the TASP Test, offered by National Evaluation Systems. The required passing standards on the THEA are: Reading and Math a score of 230 and Writing a score of 220. The specific application of the Texas Success Initiative as outlined in this statement applies to UTD students only.
  • Students may register for their first semester if they present an attendance ticket showing that they have taken the test. Students who are not exempt must bring their attendance ticket showing that they have taken the THEA in order to register for classes during Orientation.
  • Students who do not pass the THEA Test will be allowed to register, but they will be required to register for and attend developmental courses in the subject area(s) they do not pass. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of enrollment, with no refund of tuition and fees.
