S.T.A.R.T.
(Students Tackling Abusive Relationships Together)
The Carolyn Lipshy Galerstein Women's Center at The University of Texas at Dallas has teamed with The Family Place of Dallas -- a non-profit organization for battered women -- to develop the UTD S.T.A.R.T. Project (Students Tackling Abusive Relationships Together).
The project was initially designed for high school students. The project was rolled out to several north Texas college campuses in spring 2007, and 24 UTD students went through a 10-week training program with Family Place College Program Coordinator Shavana Lopez and staff. Ms. Lopez is a 2004 graduate of UTD. The course was designed to train college students in identifying, assisting and outreach to others in abusive relationships. Those 24 student participants from the spring course are now certified to train on-going classes to be offered in fall 2007 for student leader groups.
S.T.A.R.T. was developed to address the mission and initiatives of our UniTeD Against Sexual Assault project, as well as promoting student leadership training opportunities.

A warm welcome to both new and not-so-new students!
The one thing that a professor told me once that I have found so very helpful was to find a mentor…whether it be in school, at work, or in life. That mentor would be someone who you look up to in some way…it may be someone who is in a leadership role that you admire…it may be someone you simply would like to sound like or look like, or it may be as complex as someone who can pass the torch to you someday and give you a lift to success.
You may just find such mentors at the Women’s Center at UTD! You might find her here speaking about her experiences up the ladder of success. She may be a student who stops in to the Center to study or have a cup of tea. She may be a staff or faculty member who can give you a perspective you hadn’t thought of. You will find leaders who pass through our doors, and find opportunities to shine as a leader yourself. The only thing you need to do is visit and get involved!
As we start a new year, we are inspired to interact with the UTD community to raise awareness about the issues that affect women and men on our campus, in our community, and globally…providing opportunities for exchange of ideas on issues such as sexual assault and harassment awareness and prevention, relationship boundaries, balancing work and family, and developing leadership skills for life.
The Women's Center is staffed by caring and committed women who are available to help you find support regarding the challenges that women face. We welcome all visitors, including men, because issues that affect women also affect the men who know and care for them.
The Friends of the Women's Center Advisory Board helps to plan our events throughout the year. Whether you are a student, staff or faculty, you can become a member and be a voice for women’s issues.
Your suggestions are always welcome…Have the best year ever…starting this year!
