Summer Success Camps

Are you looking to get a head start on your tough classes? Check out the Academic Success Camps, hosted by award-winning faculty and led by Student Success Center content experts. These refresher courses will engage students and prepare them for the rigor of college classes. College 101, which is new to our slate of academic camps, is designed to help students navigate their first semester at UTD, focusing on topics not covered by your professors in lecture. Space is limited, so sign up early to reserve your spot.

General Chemistry Camp+

The Chemistry prep camp is intended to address topics that students will need to be familiar with before entering CHEM 1311. This is a great way to refresh chemistry skills or get a head start for the upcoming semester. The camp is taught by UTD’s award-winning faculty Dr. Amandeep Sra, and is a cognitively rich program combining lecture, workshops and hands on activities. Topics include:

  • Math Spotlight: Metric System, Scientific Notation and Significant Figures
  • A Journey Into the Atom: Sub-Atomic Particles
  • Brekaing the Code: The Periodic Table
  • What’s in a Name? Chemical Nomenclature and Chemical reactions

The camp will run for two days, 8:00am – 12:00pm each day.

The $30 registration fee includes: printed materials and a t-shirt.

Organic Chemistry Camp+

The Organic Chemistry boot camp is an intensive, three half-day workshops taught by Dr. Claudia Taenzler, recipient of the President’s Teaching Excellence Award for Non-Tenure Track Faculty. The camp is designed to bridge and/or incorporate topics from General Chemistry into Organic Chemistry. The camp’s format includes: lecture and discussion with Dr. T. and collaborative breakout sessions led by peer educators. This camp is designed for students entering CHEM 2323 in the fall.

At the end of this camp, students should be able to:

  • Draw line-angle formulas for organic compounds and additional representations of organic compounds
  • Draw resonance structures for organic compounds and determine their stability
  • Determine the acidity and/or basicity of organic compounds

The $30 registration fee includes: printed materials and a t-shirt. Dive into Organic Chemistry with Dr. T.

Algebra Camp+

The Algebra Success Camp addresses topics students will need for MATH 1325. UTD’s award-winning faculty, Dr. Jigarkumar Patel, will cover key concepts that incoming students struggle with including:

  • Polynomials and Basic Operations
  • Factorization and Rational Expression
  • Exponents and Radicals
  • Linear, Quadratic and Rational Equations
  • System of Linear Equations
  • Function and Basic Operations

The camp includes lecture and interactive group exploration and will run for two half-days.

The $30 registration fee includes: printed materials and a t-shirt.

Camp A – August 3rd and 4th (1pm-6pm)
Camp B – August 7th and 8th (12:30pm-5:30pm)

Pre-Calculus Camp+

The Pre-Calculus Success Camp addresses pre-calculus topics students will need for MATH 2413 or MATH 2417. We will cover key concepts that incoming students struggle with including:

  • Function and Basic Operations
  • Inverse of a Function, Vertical and Horizontal Asymptotes, and Graphing Principles
  • Some Famous Trigonometric Identities and Trigonometric Functions
  • Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
  • Systems of Equations and Inequalities

The camp includes lecture and interactive group exploration and will run for two half-days.

The $30 registration fee includes: printed materials and a t-shirt.

Camp A – August 3rd and 4th (12:30pm-5:30pm)
Camp B – August 7th and 8th (1pm-6pm)

College 101 Camp+

The College 101 Success Camp addresses general topics students will benefit from before their first day on campus. We will cover core academic areas that first-time college students struggle with including:

  • Time Management
  • Introduction to College Writing
  • Cracking the Syllabus
  • Understanding the Academic Calendar
  • Financial Planning
  • Stress relievers
  • Health and Wellness

The camp will run from 9am to 2pm on Friday, August 18, 2017.

The $25 registration fee includes: lunch, printed materials, and a t-shirt.
