Officer Recruiting
The UTD Police Department has recently been authorized to increase its
commissioned personnel strength from 19 Police Officers to a staff of
26 Police Officers. We are currently hiring to fill
FOUR
positions as either cadets or lateral entry Police
Officers.
UTDPD new Officers
12-21-2006, Welcome and congratulations to Officers Devin King
and Karl Zuber who graduated from the 82nd UT System Police Academy
on December 15, 2006. Officers King and Zuber will now begin
full duty with the UTDPD. Ofc. King is a graduate of Midwestern
State University and Ofc. Zuber is a graduate of The University
of Texas at Dallas.
Guard Matt Sartor Awarded
12-13-2006, Guard Matt Sartor received the Business Affairs
'Star Award' presented by the UTD Division of Business Affairs
at the quarterly Dr. Larry Terry Business Affairs Award Meeting.
Matt received the award and was recognized for his hard work,
and dedicated, loyal service to Police Department.
Assistant Chief Awarded
12-07-2006, Assistant Chief of Police Debra Marable was awared
The UTD CARE Award. Chief Marable was recognized for her hard
work, tireless efforts and leadership in establishing the new
state-of-the-art UT Dallas Police Communications & 911 Dispatch
Center. The CARE Award is a program established by the Staff
Council and approved by the President and his Cabinet to honor
outstanding staff. This program recognizes staff who have
demonstrated superior performance, offered outstanding customer
service, and performed acts which have enhanced the image of
the University. CARE Awards are awarded twice yearly.
Congratulations On Your Promotion
12-01-2006, Sergeant Roger Stearns has been offered a promotion to the
rank of Captain with the Vanderbilt University Police Department in
Nashville, Tennessee. Captain Stearns will be tasked with establishing a
new patrol divison for Vanderbilt's residential learning campus. He will
be over patrol operations and community orientated policing programs
for the new campus. He leaves the UTD Police Department after 9 1/2 years
of service and begins his new position effective January 2nd, 2007. We
will miss him and wish him all the best with his new opportunity.
New Officer Joins UTD PD
11-30-2006, This month we welcomed Officer Earl Johnson to the Police
Department. Officer Johnson is a 22 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force
where he served as a Quality Assurance/Safety Manager and Superintendent
for Conventional Weapons Systems. He also was a member of the U.S. Base
Escort Team for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) Inspection
Team.
Officer Johnson completed a Bachelor of Science degree in
Criminal Justice Administration. He graduated from the Dallas County
Sheriff's Academy in 1999 and worked for the Dallas County Community
College District prior to joining the UTD Police Department.
Officer Johnson has 7 years of law enforcement experience, is a
certified Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Instructor, and Crime Prevention
Officer. He is currently working towards a master's degree in Human
Resource Management. His favorite motto is: "Stay ready to keep from
getting ready."

11-29-2006, This semsester UTD expanded its presence near the UT
Southwestern Medical campus with the addition of the UTD Center for
Brain Health. Guard Jesse DeGuzman, of the Callier Center South
campus substation has been promoted to Senior Guard to assist the
Field Operations Lieutenant with supervision of the increased
Guard staff and Police Department services to our Dallas campuses.

On 11-20-2006, at 1:40a.m., a student reported a robbery at the Waterview
Park Apartments Phase 8 Mail station. The student was struck from behind
by an unknown number of assailants.

Wearing white colored clothing
Safety Tips:
1. Walk in groups of two or more.
2. Call UTDPD for an escort if you have to walk alone.
3. Have your car keys out and ready when walking to your car or apartment.
4. Don't use cell phones or mp 3 players while walking alone,
so you can be aware of your surroundings.
5. Immediately report any suspicious persons or circumstances to
UTDPD.

The New Lost & Found
11-20-2006, The UT-Dallas Police Department maintains the Lost & Found for
the University. If you find and item on campus, please bring it to the
Police Department lobby. The lobby telephone rings directly to our
Communicatons Center. Use the lobby phone to have a member of the Police
Department meet with you to log in the lost item(s).
If you have lost an item you can check the Lost & Found by completing the
Inquiry Form, which has been added to this website's navigation menu in
the "Online Forms" section.
UTD Police launches New Website
11-20-2006, UTD Police launched its new website,
(Version 6.0 - 2007)
. The new site does
away with the frame sets used in the previous version and expands its
features and services to the community. New features include a user
friendly navigation menu tree and easier access to all online forms
from the Police Department. The About UTDPD section of the site has
been expanded to include detailed information about Divisions, units,
personnel, services, programs, and Department history. Other new
sections include Public Information, Officer Bernard Parson Memorial
Scholarship, Online Forms, and employment information.
Post 559: Explorers Honor Officer Parson
11-01-2006, The UTD Law Enforcement Explorers have changed their unit
number from Post 883 to Post 559. The change is to honor Officer
Bernard Parson, with the Explorers using Officer Parson's badge
number for the unit. The Explorers have also conducted fundraisers
which helped establish the Officer Bernard F. Parson Memorial

Plano X: Advanced Skills Competition
10-22-2006, The UTD Police Explorer Post competed in an
"extreme" advanced skills competition over the weekend
hosted by the Plano Police Department. The event simulated
an entire 10 hour patrol shift, beginning with a patrol briefing.
Each team consisted of three Explorers in a patrol vehicle
with a Police Officer. Mock scenarioes were held at sites
throughout the city, with the Explorers dispatched to ten
scenarios. The event was very realistic for the students.
The UTD team consisted of Explorer Post Captain
Colton Rohloff, Post Lieutenant Matt Sartor, and Explorer
Andrew Smith. Corporal Terry McCurry served as the team's
Advisor. The team took home the 5th place overall trophy.
Officers Attend International Conference of IACP
10-18-2006, Officers of the UT Dallas Police Department recently
attended the Annual Conference of the International Association of
Chiefs of Police (IACP) in Boston, MA. They received high quality
training on the latest issues in law enforcement. Officers also
participated as Members of the IACP University & College Section, the
IACP Police Investigative Operations Committee and the National Law
Enforcement Exploring Committee.
Additionally, the UT Dallas Police Department was nominated for the
IACP Choice Point Award for Excellence in Criminal Investigations. The
nomination was for significance to the advancement of the art or
science of criminal investigations and innovation in the development
or enhancement of investigative techniques.

09-20-2006, Congratulations to Interim Corporal Chris Dickson
on his election this month to serve as 2006-2007 Chair of the UTD

Citizen of the Year Award
This year a new award was introduced at our banquet giving recognition to
a citizen in our community for their outstanding work in cooperation with
the mission of the UTD Police Department. We are pleased to have been
able to express our appreciation to one of UTD's great citizens. The
first honoree for this award is Kim Winkler, Associate Dean of
Students. Thank You Kim for all of your hard work and support you
have provided to us as we jointly work together to serve the students in
our community.
Inner-Campus Burglaries

A series of burglaries occurred on the UTD Campus between Friday,
September 15, 2006 at 10:00 PM and Monday, September 18, 2006 at 7:00 AM.
The offices and vending machines were burglarized in the Founders North,
Multi-Purpose/Administration Wing, and Cecil Green buildings. The
suspect(s) forced entry into the offices and vending machines.

Student Employment
08-07-2006, The UTD Police Department is accepting applications
from interested students for our Student Patrol program. Available
patrol shifts are from 6pm-10pm and 10pm-2am, seven days a week, upto
19 1/2 hours per week at $8/hour.
Prefered Qualifications:
- Candidates with an interest in a career after graduation in
criminal justice, law enforcement, government, or other related
areas.
- Students actively involved in the campus community.
Required Qualifications:
- Applicant must be enrolled as a UTD student.
- Must pass a criminal background check.

Bicycle Registration Service
08-07-2006, To help deter bicycle theft, the UTD Police are
encouraging the campus community to register their bicycles. Bicycle
registration aids law enforcement in identifying and returning lost or
stolen bicycles. The information you provide is confidential and will
not be given out to unauthorized individuals. We encourage you to
mark your bicycles by engraving your phone number or other
identifying mark on it. The Police Department has engravers you may
use free of charge. We also have ultraviolet ink you may mark your
bicycle with. Remember, marking your bicycle is not a theft
deterrent, but it can aid in returning your bicycle if it is lost or
stolen.

Explorers Win at National Competition
07-19-2006, During the week of July 9-15 the UTD Police Explorers
attended the National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference hosted on the
campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. More than
4,000 Explorers representing all 50 states competed at the 15th biennial
conference. The UTD team consisted of Post Captain Karla Beckner, Post
Sergeant Colton Rohloff, and Explorer Jason Spradlin. The Post competed in
three team competition events and placed in two. UTD Explorers received
1st Place in Domestic Violence Intervention, and 3rd Place in Community
Service. The Explorers did an outstanding job of representing UTD. We are
very proud of them.

07-01-2006, The following personnel have been promoted in the
Department's reorganization. Lt. Billy Talkington has been promoted
to the rank of Captain and oversees all areas under Administrative &
Investigative Services. Corporal/Senior Detective Steve Finney has
been promoted to the rank of Sergeant and leads the Criminal
Investigation Division. TCO Doug John has been promoted to the
position of Communications Supervisor. Guard Ryan Ballard has been
transferred to Auxiliary Services and promoted to the rank of Senior
Guard. Congratulations to all of the above on their promotions. The

Welcome to the Department
06-28-2006, The UT-Dallas Police Department and the Office of
Environmental Health and Safety have partnered to establish the Office of
Emergency Management (OEM). This collaboration will enable us to serve the
University community with a higher level of service and response by
combining resources and training. With the creation of this new Office
we welcome Dorothy L. Miller to the UTD Police Department.
Dorothy joined the UTD Police Department's Administration Team in May
2006. She has more than 3 1/2 years of experience managing in academic
program development. She has recruited and guided teams of instructors and
advisory councils for certificate programs and for the annual emergency
management / homeland security readiness conference. Among her
accomplishments has been the development of first university certificate
program in the state to address public and private sector disaster
training and communications needs. She is a founder of the Higher
Education Foundation for Emergency Management/Homeland Security
Accreditation Team and Honor Society Chair. Additionally, she is a
trainer/coordinator with the City of Allen, TX and UT Dallas Community
Emergency Response Teams; and serves as a Neighborhood Watch Coordinator.
Dorothy is a member of the Board of Directors for Dallas County Citizen
Corps Council, and is a member of the International Association of
Emergency Managers.
New Video on Website
06-07-2006, Three new videos have been placed on the
Department's website. These videos serve as an introduction
to the UTD Police Department. The "Services" video helps to
better inform the community about the services offered and the
qualifications of our Officers. The second video was produced
to assist with attracting quality applicants into a professional
career as a Police Officer with UTD. The third video highlights
our Law Enforcement Explorer program, and is aimed at recruiting
UTD students into the Police Department as members of this educational
and career building partnership program with our Officers.

On 5-23-06, at 10:00 PM, a student reported a male yelled at her and
then exposed his genitals while she walked through the Waterview Park
Apartments. The male then approached and pinched the student before
fleeing from the area.

Officers Receive Meritorious Conduct Award
05-21-2006, UT System Police Director Roy Baldridge honored two UTD Police
Officers with the Meritorious Conduct Award. The award recognizes these
Officers for their dedication, perseverance, and profesionalism in the
Criminal Investigations Division. Congratulations to Detective Steve
Finney and Officer Chris Dickson. Our thanks to you both for your
outstanding service to the UTD community.

05-07-2006, On the morning of May 5th, 2006 a male subject entered an
unsecured apartment in Waterview Park Apartments. The resident of the
apartment yelled at the subject and he left the apartment. The subject
was described as follows:
- Possible Hispanic Male
- Height: 5'07" to 5'08"
- Weight: 160 - 180 lbs
- Unknown hair and eye description
- Subject had a mustache
- Subject was wearing long sleeve and baggy clothes

UTD Officer Receives ILEETA Scholarship
04-09-2006, The International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers
Association (ILEETA) awarded ten scholarships to law enforcement
instructors through the United States and abroad. Detective Finney was
selected as one of the scholarship recipients and will attend the 2006
ILEETA Conference in Chicago, IL in April 2006 and represent the UT
Dallas Police Department.
UTD Officer Selected as a NCUI Conference Instructor
04-07-2006, Detective Finney was selected to instruct and present a
training course entitled Narcotics Investigations on University Campuses
at the National College & University Investigators Conference hosted by
the George Mason University Police Department in Manassas, Virginia in
August 2006. Some of the agencies scheduled to attend include: Georgia
Tech, Princeton, Georgetown, St. Mary.s, UT Tyler, Georgia State,
Columbia, Carnegie Mellon, University of Maryland and dozens of other
college and university law enforcement agencies.
UTD Students Win at State Competition
04-01-2006, The State Exploring competition was held for the fifth
consecutive year at the UTD campus on Saturday. Seventy-Eight teams of
students from across Texas, including teams from Florida, Louisiana
and Oklahoma, competed in Law Enforcement Scenarios. Competition Events
included: FBI Crisis Negotiation, ATF Bomb Threat Response, DEA Arrest
Search & Seizure, Unknown Risk Traffic Stops, High Risk Traffic Stops,
Medical Assist First Aid, Accident Investigation, Crime Prevention,
Burglary In Progress, Robbery in Progress, Domestic Crisis Intervention,
911 Call for Police and Crime Scene Investigation.
The team of UTD Students included Ty Cao, Caleb Holzapfel, Explorer
Sergeant Colton Rohloff and Explorer Captain Karla Beckner. Our students
received the following recognition at the conference.

UTD Student and Explorer Captain Karla Beckner received the
Explorer of the Year award from the Texas Law Enforcement Explorer
Advisor Association.
Student Patrol Is "In Service"
03-02-2006, The UTD Police Department has hired twenty students to
serve as Student Community Service Officers in the new Student Patrol
program.
Students are assisting the UTD Police and the community by serving as
trained eyes and ears conducting foot patrols on the campus, which
includes the residential areas of the campus. Services include walking
escorts, motorist assists, entry assists, and performing other support
services
roles that do not require a commissioned Police Officer. Student CSOs
will identify and report on suspicious activity and safety issues while
conducting their patrols. Additionally, Student Patrol staffs the
Information Center from 6pm - 2am, extending the hours of service of the
Information Center. Student Patrol is on duty daily from 6pm -2am.
UTD Students 1st Place at Competition
02-08-2006, UTD Police Explorers competed Jan. 28th at a 6th
annual regional competition in Lake Jackson. The team consisted
of Explorers Karla Beckner, Matt Sartor, Ty Cao and Caleb Holzapfel.
Congratulations to our students on another OUTSTANDING job well done!
