My name is Jen Lasagna, and I'm the new assistant director of the Veteran Services Center at UT Dallas. I come to the position as a Navy veteran, having spent five years enlisted as a Russian linguist/analyst ('92-'97). For my fellow Navy seamen, that's a CTI2. I did my A-school training at the Presidio of Monterey and Goodfellow AFB, with my permanent and final duty station at NSGA Misawa Air Base, Japan.
I separated in 1997 to return stateside and finish my education. I earned my bachelor's degree at Texas State University '98, and my master's at The University of Texas at Arlington '01. My career in higher education began at Texas State, where I worked as an admissions processor and orientation assistant. I then worked at UTA as the assistant director of transfer admissions until 2003, when I left to start a small college consulting company, JBL College Consulting. In 2012, I began looking at returning to a campus environment, and by April I had accepted a position with UT Dallas' Naveen Jindal School of Management as part of their recruiting department.
I'm excited and ready to help make this center the example of what a successful Veteran Services Center should be. Our mission is simple: veterans first. We will work diligently to identify and understand what our veteran students' needs are, and provide the tools and resources that will help new veterans transition smoothly to campus. We'll also work to help our current students become engaged and active leaders on campus.
We want the center to be a campus "USO" that provides a space for vets who need a quiet moment to relax or study, or who want to pop in for quick snack from the "geedunk" locker, which is now open. With about 700 veterans on campus, and half that number representing UT Dallas as alumni, we aim to be a community that is here to help however we can.
The center is open Monday-Friday from 0800 to 1800. Come by and introduce yourself—we would love to meet you!
