Vet Spotlight: Melissa Baker
At 26-years-old, it's hard to imagine that Melissa Baker is already a two-time Iraqi war vet. An aspiring investigator studying criminology at UT Dallas, Melissa served more than four years as an intelligence analyst in the United States Army. She says the obstacles she faced during her time in the Army have prepared her for the next phase in her life.
Now a junior in the School of Economic, Political & Policy Sciences, Melissa began her college career in her home state of Massachusetts before bringing her talents to Texas. Moving to a new school, not to mention a new state, can be a tough transition. "Having a resource like the Veteran Services Center has allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals," she said. "It's provided me a more intimate place on campus to interact with people to whom I can relate."
Melissa admits there were some hardships associated with returning to student life, but she said her military experience taught her to be punctual and disciplined as she continues her educational journey. "I went to war in Iraq. Chances are, I'll be okay with the pressure at UT Dallas."
