Web Publishing Policy

Requirements Summary

Each heading links to further descriptions of the requirements for that section with some examples.


Accessibility

1. Contain no priority 1 errors as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 1 (WWWC WCAG 1.0 - http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/ )

(a) Frames sites:

i. Contain no priority 1 or 2 errors according to WWWC WCAG 1.0
ii. Drop the frame(s) when indexing or pointing to other web sites

2. Comply with the WWWC HTML guidelines version 4.01: http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/ , Validate for 4.01 Transitional,
and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) level 1 (and level 2) if applicable: http://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/

3. Keep pages small and minimize graphics - assume users have a 28.8kb connection

4. Provide an accessible version of all Document Image Files (.pdf, .doc) and a link to:

(a) A free copy of the associated reader for the document image file
(b) accessibility instructions for the reader

5. Include these meta tags:

(a) Title - page topic or subject.
(b) Description - brief description of the subjects covered.
(c) Keywords - specific to the page subject, and should not exceed 25 words.
(d) Author - State of Texas, state agency name, department/school/web contact as appropriate.

6. Consider colorblind users when choosing color combinations - WWWC WCAG 1.0 checkpoint 2.2


Site Maintenance

1. Do not put anything other than currently active or actively tested webpages and associated files in your web directory.

2. Check your links and keep them current.

3. Link to general information (ex. course catalog , class schedule ) rather than duplicating it.

4. Changes to access lists for website maintenance must be coordinated through webmaster@utdallas.edu .

5. Requests for additions or changes to the web hierarchy (address/directory name) must be coordinated through University Web Services at webdeveloper@utdallas.edu .


Required links and page elements
1. Include a graphical or textual element that identifies "The University of Texas at Dallas."

2. Link to the UTD home page from all pages and link to the school/dept/office home page from all sub-pages in your site

3. Include the date that the page was last modified.

4. Include contact information for the page maintainer.

5. Name your home page file appropriately for the server you use so that ending a url with a "/" brings up the home page.

6. Use descriptive links, not "click here."


Additional Laws and Policies
1. Follow both the laws and policies governing copyright infringement, intellectual property rights and other applicable laws regarding libel, privacy laws, trademarks, obscenity, computer fraud and First Amendment rights.

2. Comply with the UTD Website Privacy Policy .

3. Comply with the UTD Visual Identity Guidelines .

4. If the site is designed for children, comply with federal and state laws designed to protect minors.
