Hays 3-D Hydrogeologic Model
Welcome to the web-browsable 3D Hydrogeologic model of Hays, Kansas. It
allows you to view the underground geology and hydrology of Hays and
vicinity, including the ability to manipulate and traverse any part of
the model. This model was prepared as part of an EPA-funded exploration
of advanced Well Head Protection Area (WHPA) delineation approaches. It
is a research tool, intended to help researchers and water-quality
managers assess hydrologic conditions at Hays. We are beginning the
process of modifying the model as part of a Source Water Protection
demonstration for public education. In the early stages of this
conversion, Web access to the model may be daunting (see requirements
below), but if you are able to view the model, please send me
your comments.
Requirements:
-
Java 1.1-capable browser (get Netscape 4.5 here)
-
VRML 2.0-capable plugin (CosmoPlayer 2.1 is built-in to Netscape 4.05+,
otherwise look here)
-
patience or at least a T1 Internet connection, Hays model is ~ 600Kb of
data
-
test your browser for VRML
capability (use "Back" button to return)
Go to:
Hints:
-
To encourage successful loading of large VRML worlds, first load a
small VRML file (overcomes a Java-VRML dependency "bug", try
the demo file rgb_test)
-
Load the VRML world only (no Java required). Then try loading the
VRML+Java model.
-
If loading of the Hays model fails, try opening the Java console on
your browser (under "Options" or "Communicator" in
Netscape). If the error message "Failed to get the browser"
appears, try step #1 above, or select "Reload" while holding
down the Shift key (at least in Netscape) to force a repeat download of
the model.
