This is an Outdoor Lab, although we will do our data analysis
indoors in the main room of the Science Center. Be prepared for
weather conditions, and bring/wear the following:
- filled out and signed Indemnity Release
and Medical Information
forms
- long pants (not required, but best way to ward off
ticks
)
- when outdoors tuck your pants into your socks, shirt into
pants
- spray bug spray around ankles (on clothing), neck, sleeve
ends; anywhere a wandering tick might get inside your
clothing...
- hat
- lunch (we'll provide bottled water, and an hour long lunch
break; you can go out for fast food)
- your own drink (in case you don't want water, or we run out)
- bug spray
- notebook and writing tools. Ruler and graph paper wouldn't hurt
- calculator (cell phone is fine, and we'll work in groups of 4
anyway)
- field-appropriate shoes (it may be muddy; high heels
definitely inappropriate; uncovered feet subject to attack by
ticks, bugs, saw grass, snakes, careless students, etc.)
Grading will be based on
data collection and analysis as recorded in field/lab notebooks for
each lab topic listed in the syllabus. The summer session does not
allow for absences, please plan accordingly.
This course has no prerequisites. Students are assumed to have
fulfilled the math and science requirements for admission to UTD.
A textbook is not required for the course, these classnotes will
generally be sufficient. A copy of the recommended textbook for the
course will be placed on reserve in the library. That book is ``A
Manual of Field Hydrogeology'' by L. S. Sanders, ISBN 0132279274.
