HOW TO SAVE A SCREEN IMAGE IN SOLARIS 2.x

The Sun Solaris screen/window snapshot program is called "snapshot" (duh!), and it lives in the directory $OPENWINHOME/bin/xview/. Make sure that this directory is in your search path. [$OPENWINHOME is the value of an environment variable. You can find out the values of all of your environment variables with the command "env".]
  1. Make sure that the window of which you want to take a snapshot is on top (in the foreground).
  2. Launch the snapshot program. You will get a screen like this:
    snapshot screen

  3. Choose the delay (the time that you want to elapse between the instant at which you click on "Snap" and the instant at which the snapshot is taken). A non-zero delay is useful if you want to get the cursor out of the way.
  4. If you choose "Window", you must use your left mouse button to select the window of which you want a snapshot.
  5. Before quitting snapshot, save the image.
  6. You can print directly from snapshot, or you can attach a saved .rs (Sun raster image) file to an email message containing the text portion of your homework.
