Fall 2002

Professor C. D. Cantrell, UT-Dallas

Fellow, IEEE

Director, PhoTEC

Welcome

Welcome to the unofficial EE 6310 public home page. The official home page is located on the UTD WebCT server.

Students who are enrolled in EE 6310 have access to full lecture notes, assignments, threaded discussion groups, chat rooms, a whiteboard, private EE 6310 email, and other amenities. If you are enrolled in EE 6310, please point your browser to http://webct.utdallas.edu/ and log in using your UNIX username and password.

(If you are enrolled in EE 6310 and you have trouble logging in to the the UT-Dallas WebCT server, please point your browser to the UTD NetID server to get the ID that you need to use for WebCT access.)

The online syllabus covers the content, prerequisites, textbooks, logistics, policies and procedures of the course.

EE 6310 is one of several Master's-level networking courses that are being planned and developed by some of the UT-Dallas faculty. EE 6310 is also one of the core courses for the M.S.E.E. with a concentration in optical and photonic materials, devices and systems.

Providing amounts and kinds of interactivity that are equivalent to the interactivity of an on-site class in which students participate actively is a technical and logistical challenge. The means that are widely available with the current generation of Internet technology, and that require moderate amounts of bandwidth by current standards, are:

Electronic mail

WebCT provides secure email for the instructor and students.

Discussions

The discussion tool in WebCT functions like a bulletin board. New topics can be created in order to organize the postings.

Chat

Online chat is a somewhat limited substitute for face-to-face discussions. It's limited to ASCII text.

Whiteboard

The whiteboard permits one to have a technical discussion online, with equations and drawings. A writing tablet makes the whiteboard much easier to use than if one tries to draw with the mouse.
