OLIVE (Older Living Independently)

Description

OLIVE is a cellphone utility which is designed to act as multifunctional
tool that would help the people with disabilities to have a smoother life.
It provides personal assistance to users (mainly the elderly
and the physically challenged). The personal assistance provided
will be of the type that will enable to live more independently
and reduce their reliance on others.

The main functionality of the application is to enable the users to communicate
more appropriately with others using visual clues apart from their normal
communication. The application will enable the user to get a picture for their description.
This would tumble down the communication barriers. It even facilitates the user to teach
the application by assigning their own voice description so that whenever he/she gets a picture
for their description the application will even speak out the description associated with it.

Target Group

The target group of the system will be older and physically challenged people.
This group requires a certain amount of attention and assistance for their own well-being.
This sort of assistance and supervision consumes and demands a great deal of resources
including time and emotions of relatives or loved ones and money to pay for the services
of senior homes or in-home care-takers.

Current Functionality

The application currently supports "Search" and "Teach" options

Search

This enables the users to get related pictures for their thoughts.
As visual communication is more efficient than oral communication, this would
cut down the communication barriers especially for the old people when communicating
with others. The application also speaks out the description associated with the picture
when the picture is pulled up on the screen.

Teach

The Teach functionality enables the users to actually teach the system.
They can assign their own oral description to the pictures.
