TUTORIAL

TIPS FOR MORE EFFICIENT SEARCHING:

  1. Enter your search term in lower case to return both upper and lower case results.
  2. Enclose terms in quotation marks if you want to search literally (as opposed to subject search).  To search for a person’s name, use quotes, eg. “Rose”.
  3. Expand your search using OR. blitter OR sprite will find either term, or both terms
  4. Narrow your search using AND.  blitter AND sprite will only return results where both terms are mentioned
  5. Exclude pages that are not relevant using NOT.  blitter NOT sprite will omit any result that contains lobster.

SIMPLE SEARCHES (consist of a single word or phrase)

  1. STEMMED WORDS:  A search for compute will return results for compute, computer and computers.
  2. Use “compute” to search for just the word compute.
  3. ALWAYS USE QUOTES to search for terms that include unusual characters, such as the ampersand:  Use quotes eg “S&L” for the string S&L, S & L, or S L.
  4. Use <CASE> LED for the string LED in upper case.  This search will return matches for the acronym LED, omitting all instances of led in lower case.  (light emitting diode)
  5. Use computer systems architecture for the phrase computer systems architecture.
  6. The WILDCARD Asterisk is used to match terms with the same root or prefix, eg. use comput* for words beginning with the string comput (computerized, computing, computers).
  7. The WILDCARD Question Mark is used to substitute for characters in a particular position in a word eg. use conc??ved to search for conceived and concieved.
  8. The words AND, OR, and NOT are recognized as Boolean operators, so in order to search a term eg computers and computing, the phrase must be entered as computers “and” computing.

COMBINING SEARCH TERMS

  1. Search firewall OR filter to find any of the words (expand your search).
  2. Search firewall AND filter to find all of the words.
  3. Search firewall filter for any of the words.  The more instances of these words in a page, the higher it appears in the results list.
  4. Search firewall NOT filter for the word bank but not the word river.
  5. HTML <NEAR> publishing will find the word HTML close to the word publishing.
  6. HTML <SENTENCE> publishing  will find the word HTML and publishing in the same sentence.
  7. HTML <PARAGRAPH> publishing will find the word HTML and publishing in the same paragraph.
