      Homework Policy:
    • All homework is due at the beginning of class on date listed below. 2 pts will be deducted if not received by the beginning of class but turned in by 4:55pm on due date. 3 pts will be deducted if HW turned in after 4:55pm on due date, but before the grader is given the HWs. No credit will be given for HW turned in after the grader has received the HWs (which could be as early as 5pm on due date).
    • You must staple your HW. If it is not stapled 2 pts will be deducted from your HW score.

HW 5: Find a minimum of 2 news articles showing the use or misuse of mathematics. Write a brief summary pointing out the interesting use or misuse of math. Include a copy of the article with the source (name of newspaper, magazine, etc along with date of publication and page number). Note this HW assignment will not be returned to you. Due Thurs, April 23
      HW 6: Read p. 648 - 662, 703 - 722, 226 - 229. Ch 17: 1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 10 Due Thurs, Feb 26

Starting with HW 8, you will often be assigned HW problems that were written by Dr. Lefcourt and found on her web page. Since they were written for her Fall 302 course, not all comments made in the HW will apply to us. For example, "as discussed in class" means discussed in her class, not necessarily ours. Also you do not need to send me e-mail again (unless you have not received a reply from me concerning your HW 4 in which case you need to send the survey to me again). Many of the comments, however are good suggestions--for example, "TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OFFICE HOURS" and "Form a study group." HW 8: Read p. 703 - 722. Go to http://rene.ma.utexas.edu/~lefcourt/F97/M302/hw1.htm and do problems 1 - 9. Due Thurs, Mar 12 Note both annual yield and effective annual yield refer to APY. HW 8 answers HW8 answers typo: #4 does not say that the interest in compounded monthly, and thus one should assume that the 5% and 15% refer to APY. Either answer will be accepted on this HW #4 correct answer: $1000[(1.05)^3][(1.10)^22] = $9423.39 #3 correct answer: 450000*.06/(365*24*60*60) = .0008561643835
HW 9: Go to http://rene.ma.utexas.edu/~lefcourt/F97/M302/hw2.htm and do problems 1 - 4, 7, 8, 9 (since the compounding period is not given, you may choose one of compounding monthly, daily (360/360), or yearly). Note for #8, the retirement worksheet has moved to http://www.nbfunds.com/retirement/retirewksheet.html Print out your Retirement Worksheet - Results including how they came up with your number. If your are uncomfortable about giving out personal info on the web, you can make up imaginary names and numbers and/or use your math account (If you want one and don't have one yet--pick one up from Mr. Pan, RLM 12.124). And go to more HW and do all these problems Due, Thurs Mar 26 HW answers to lefcourt HW more HW answers
      HW 10: Read p. 176 - 193 Ch 5: 5, 6, 7, 15, 17, 19 Due Thurs Apr 2 Some ch 5 even answers (note I have only assigned #6 for HW 10)

Note HW 5 due Thurs, April 23
HW 13: Read p. 278 - 296 and do Ch 7: 23, 24, 27, 28, 30, 43, 44, 45, 47, 51, 52 and do Problem A (courtesy of Dr. Lefcourt): Examine 71-year Historical Return Bar Graph , and observe that in the long run, stocks have performed the best over the long run. Using the scatterplot of Volatility vs. Return, explain why you wouldn't necessarily want to put all of your money into stocks. and do Ch 6: 41, 45, 46, 47, 52 Due Thurs Apr 23

http://www.ma.utexas.edu/wwwboard/m340l.darcy/wwwboard.html. and do problems A & B listed in the message dated 4/30/98 Answers posted in the message dated 5/05/98 Due, Tues, May 5
Do you have a hard time finding a free computer to use? Are the lines too long at UGL? Get a math account from Mr. Pan, RLM 12.124. The math department computers are always available --no waiting. But don't wait to the last minute to get your HW done -- the no waiting is never guarenteed.
    • Each assignment is worth 20 pts. Usually 2 problems per assignment will be graded each worth 5 pts. The remaining 10 pts are determined by how complete your HW is. Sometimes the entire 20 pts will be based on completeness. You are required to pick up your homework and keep it until the end of the semester. Old assignments can be picked up from a box outside of my office.
    • Collaboration on the homework is allowed and recommended; however, each individual student is responsible for turning in your own homework in your own words. Any significant collaboration should be acknowledged. Copying is not collaboration and will be prosecuted under scholastic dishonesty. (see below).

    Exams

    • You are required to bring identification to all exams. All exams will consist of two parts stapled separately. Make sure you receive and do both part A and part B. You are required to pick up your exams and keep them until the end of the semester.

    • Exam 1:

Bring student ID. You may also bring a calculator and an 8.5" x 11"
summary sheet on which you may write on both sides.

      Extra office hours for exam 1: Monday, Feb 16, 3:30 - 5pm.

Hints for studying for the exam:

1.) look at sample test problem (#10 in HW4)

2.) Read over your class notes, perhaps redoing some of the examples
           you saw in class.

3.) Review your homework. Check even answers (posted outside my office

4.) MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure you understand what you are doing.
Spending time to understand how to do one problem is far more
profitable than doing 20 problems without understanding.

Hints for studying for the final:

1.) Do some extra practice problems (on reserve in the UGL library).
Note, however that these are only extra practice problems and DO NOT
constitute a review. They do NOT cover all the material which will
be on the final. You are not required to do any or all of these
problems, but I do recommend doing some of them.

2.) Read over your class notes, perhaps redoing some of the examples

3.) Review your exams. Check your answers (posted outside my door, RLM

4.) Review your homework (especially the "more HW" and early saver/late

at the UGL library--note, some answers are only posted on reserve at
the library and other answers are only posted on the web).

    Table of contents

    Grading system

All work must be shown in order to receive credit: this holds for all HW and exams.
    • HW: 15%
    • Exams: 17% x 3 = 51%
    • Final: 34%
The following calculation may also be used:
    • Homework: 15%
    • 2 highest Exam grades: 17% x 2 = 34%
    • Final: 51%
If this grade is higher AND if your final demonstrates that you know the material corresponding to your lowest midterm, you will be given this higher grade. If you earn any grade below a B on the final, it is unlikely that you have demonstrated that you know the material corresponding to your lowest midterm.

  • THERE IS NO CURVE IN THIS CLASS.

Your attendance at each scheduled class meeting is expected. Incompletes cannot be given to avoid failing grades.

    Scholastic dishonesty policy

Scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
