This
workshop is designed to meet the University’s requirements for advanced reading
and comprehension of Spanish by MA and PhD candidates. Students must have
attained at least intermediate competency (usually equivalent to four semesters
of Spanish courses) and are also advised to take HUMA 6321: Spanish Review before
registering for this workshop. In either case, at the beginning of the course,
they will take a test comparable to those prepared by the Educational Testing
Service to assess individual levels of proficiency in Spanish.
Coursework itself will focus on translation and textual analysis but
will include supplementary grammar review, all designed to facilitate the
decoding of texts in various fields of the arts and humanities.
REQUIRED TEXTS:
S. L. de la Vega, C. Salazar, Avanzando:
Gramática Española y Lectura. John-Wiley,
New York, latest edition
RECOMMENDED TEXTS:
Any major Spanish & English dictionary like Oxford, Larousse or
Simon & Schuster’s
E. Spinelli, English Grammar for Students of Spanish, The Olivia
& Hill Press, Ann Arbor, MI., latest edition
Dictionary of 501 Spanish Verbs or equivalent
COURSE REQUIREMENTS / EVALUATION CRITERIA:
During the course Spanish literary excerpts will be assigned for
translation as homework, a few translations quizzes will be given in class,
mostly for self-evaluation of the participants.
The instructor will keep track of attendance, of progress in translation
skills, and of student’s homework and quiz results. At the end of the session
an evaluation of the above components will be factored into the final grade.
