About Me

Dr. Fang Qiu is currently an Associate Professor of GIS and Remote Sensing at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he teaches graduate classes in the Program in Geographic Information Sciences.  He received his B.Sc. from the East China Normal University in 1990, M.Sc. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993, and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 2000.  He is an ESRI-certified GIS instructor and was the first director of the Arc/Info Consulting and Training Center of China. He has conducted numerous government-sponsored GIS projects at the National Lab. of Resources and Environmental Information Systems of China from 1993 to 1996, and NASA Affiliated Research Center remote sensing projects at the University of South Carolina from 1996 to 2000. His research work at the University of Texas at Dallas is being funded by major federal government agencies, such as National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), etc. Dr. Qiu has also served as a reviewer for numerous academic journals, book publishers, and as a panelist for National Science Foundation proposal review.

Dr. Qiu’s research and instructional areas are remote sensing digital image processing, spatial analysis and modeling, GIS application software development, and web-based mapping and information processing. His current research examines the integration of neural network and fuzzy logic to facilitate the understanding and improvement of traditional remote sensing image classification, raster based spatial analysis to support urban and environment change detection and simulation, application of spatial data analysis in public health related problems, and application software and Internet mapping service design and development. Dr. Qiu’s publications have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as International Journal of Remote Sensing, Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, Computers and Geosciences, GIScience and Remote Sensing, GeoCarto International, Forest Ecology and Management, Journal of Geophysical Research and other academic journals.
