Modern Individualism

Spring 2007

Take Home Exam 1

Write an essay (6-9 pages double-spaced) comparing the theory of the individual found in Descartes Meditations and Passions of the Soul with that found in Locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding. The thesis that you must defend is that Locke’s theory of the individual either is or is not a logical extension of the theory presented by Descartes.

In your answer be sure to consider (at least) the following topics:

The relationship between the mind and the body

What it means for an individual to know himself or herself

The role that reason plays in defining an individual

The role that the passions play in defining an individual

The nature of human freedom

There is no need to refer to secondary material to write a good answer. Your arguments must be supported by textual citations. Part of your grade will be based upon your ability to back up your argument with such citations. You may not discuss this assignment with any of your classmates outside the classroom. This is not a group project. We will discuss this assignment as a group in class. Dr. Harpham will be available to answer any problems that might come up while you are writing the paper.

Papers are due on March 1 at the beginning of class.
