Getting the ‘Lead’ Out of Leadership

 19 March 2005 | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Erik Jonsson ECS south building, room 2.212

Welcome to the second leadership workshop at the University of Texas at Dallas. Over the course of the day we challenge you to learn and appreciate the leadership tactics presented and to form bonds with fellow students, industry members and faculty.

9:45 – 10:30                 Meet and Greet (Intro by Dr. Ivor Page)

10:30 – 11:00               Icebreaker leadership problem

One key to a good leader is the ability to appreciate the abilities of others. This activity, with a twist, will encourage leaders to emerge and force teams to work together with limited information.

11:00 – 11:15               Part I – The Elements: Leadership Fundamentals

11:15 – 12:00               Real world problem solving

Teams will be dealt technical, real world issues to discuss and solve in a limited time. Teams will create posters explaining the solutions to their different problems. Keys to solving the problem in time will be quick assessment of problem specifications, effective delegation, and polished presentation.

12:00 – 12:45               Lunch and poster presentations

12:45 – 1:00                 Part II – Compounding Interest: Leadership and Enthusiasm

1:00 – 1:45                   Constructive Solutions

Teams are given a set of construction materials and a challenge. With only limited information, time and supplies at first, teams must construct a prototype device. The leaders who emerge will have to effectively assess a rapidly changing problem set to win the “competitive contract.”

1:45 – 2:00                   Part III – Reactions: Pulling it all Together
