I also believe that Ellis is doing something with the Color Scheme, so jump ahead if you like)

Ellis, Warren. Planetary.  Issue 2 Vol. 1.  Art by John Cassaday. Wildstorm Productions: La Jola, 1999.

(Most of my quotes are from Planetary Issue 1 with Images from WWW.WarrenEllis.com, WWW.Wildstorm.com, with links to pictures from The Snowflake designed by David Curkovic and The Good Doctor from Bob's Pop Culture Place.)

Planetary Issue Two:  Title:  Island

Scene:  Opens with 6 Men on a life boat.  Survival Gear.  White Polar outfits.  Japanese Bandanas.
(This is a direct play off of old Godzilla Movies.)

The Guy leading the expedition is named Ryu, who we find out later is a novelist.
He prefers to be called Master Storyteller.
He claims to know no novels and that his work is scripture.  The beginning of the clearer theme of the story.

According to Ryu:  This island is a nowhere thing.  Between Russia, Japan and Siberia.

Ryu has plans to take over Japan.
The first thing he and his men see is a giant dead moth.  (Clearly a play off Mothra.)

Enter Planetary Field Team:
Setting:  Japan

Snow:  Offices all over the world.
We meet Shinya Fukuda.  Chief of Japanese Planetary Station.

Shinya knows that the team is going to Zero Island

Snow Speaks Japanese.

Zero island is the closes land mass in the Japanese Archipelego to Eurasian Landmass--Russia.

Zero Island is owned by No one.

Note: Jakita has been to Zero Island with Snow's Predecessor.

According to Drummer:  Mosters live on Zero Island

The Accolytes and Ryu view another dead monster.  Three headed.  Obviously a Godzilla Villain.

Snow smokes a ciggarette once every few Years.  So does Jakita.  (Connection)

Next Scene:  Ryu in his men in the Ribcage of Giant lizard.

This is CLEARLY Godzilla

According to Ryu:  This things are out dreams.
They remind of us our greatness and horror
This is out business.  This is what where we came to plan what we have brought with is.
Come Sit eat.  I insist.

Ryu offers his men a large bite of Godzilla's flesh
Very fitting.  The flesh of Godzilla.  Clearly, one of Japan's most common creations and modern
day myths.  One of Japan's Gods.  Ryu wants the men to eat of their god's flesh.

Nicely done.

Jakita moves with Super speed.  Ryu shoots one of his men.

Guards appear out of nowhere.
7guards, who say they can't allow Ryu and his men to leave.
Ryu kills them all by shooting a nerve gas Cannister.

Snow dissolves the gas in mid air.  Heat subtraction.

The guards wear insignia. American, Japanese and Russian patches.

To my Surprise Russia's first flage was actually 3 Horizontal bars of Red White and Blue

I mistook it for the French Flag. Which uses vertical Bars.

Doh!

According to Jakita: there was reported an explosion years ago.
We can't say for sure if it was a an atomic bomb.  she describes it as a white light.

My theory:  Snow Flake. Snow Flake! Snow Flake!!

One monster is still alive.
