Martin always wondered what "The devil is in the details" actually meant; however today it was perfectly clear. After one little mistake he had been called by 5 of his 6 bosses and had paperwork coming out of his ears. He was beginning to think that paperwork was inherently evil as his eyes followed the approaching red hair of the office receptionist over the cubical wall, knowing it was coming his way. She rounded the corner with another huge stack of papers for him to finish before he left today.
"This is absurd," Martin thought to himself, "how can they expect one person to finish all this work?" He tried imagine himself as some kind of Super Employee. The one man work horse who could finish signing a huge stack of papers within a matter of seconds. Coming out of his fantasy he looked up at the clock in anguish realizing how he had already spent half an hour of his one hour alloted lunch break fretting over the work he had to do.
Martin sudenly realized that there wasn’t anything particularly empowering about a power lunch, power walking, or power napping, but work lately had him doing all three. It was crunch time, everyone was scrambling, and it felt like no one was making headway. The higher-ups always had more to pile on.
Martin sighed when he just finished unwrapping his sandwich to the sound of his ring tone. _________ calling. Martin sighed again
