SCM-MS Course Substitution Guidelines     Ideally, the SCM-MS students should follow the SCM-MS Curriculum as close as possible. However, there can be cases where course substitutions may be appropriate. Two of such cases happen with transfer students and advanced students.

Transfer students are those who recently studied for other degrees at UTD and now want to have SCM-MS degree. These students might have taken courses (possibly required by the other degrees) that can be used to substitute for the SCM-MS courses, especially for the SCM-MS business core courses. For example, a 3 credit accounting course may be substituted for AIM 6305 or a 3 credit finance course may be substituted for FIN 6301. AIM 6305 can also be substituted by a 2 credit accounting course and 1 credit independent study course taken from accounting area. All these substitutions are subject to approval by the SOM advising office where the individual student must apply well in advance of his/her expected graduation date.

A special set of transfer students are those who completed Supply Chain Management certificate at C4ISN. The courses taken during the certification equate to 6 credit hours. These courses are regular UTD courses with codes of the form MAS6v01. One of the certification courses can be used as an independent study course with 3 credits so students with the certification need to complete only 9 credit hours from the prescribed elective course list as opposed to regular 12 credit hours. The other certification course can be used as a free elective so the students with the certification do not have to take a free elective. In summary, course requirements for students with certification become 21 credit hours in Required Courses and 9 credit hours in Prescribed Electives.

Advanced students are those who completed other graduate degrees either at other institutions or a while back at UTD. For example, a student with a master degree in finance may want to pursue SCM-MS. Presumably, such a student already knows the subjects studied in FIN 6301. Since studying the same topics twice is not productive, this student may want to substitute another finance course for FIN 6301. A student in this situation should consult the SCM-MS academic director and consequently may consider taking finance courses that are relevant for SCM-MS. Such courses deal with real/financial options, valuation of portfolios/alternatives, risk management, etc.

The guiding principle in substitution is that a course is substituted by another course from the same business discipline. Since the SCM-MS degree aims for a balanced basic business knowledge both in accounting and finance area, students must take at least one course from each of these areas. Students can also use two courses, each with two credits, from the accounting or the finance area to substitute for AIM 6305 or FIN 6301. A good example is using AIM 6201 and AIM 6202 to substitute for AIM 6305.

Students seeking course substitutions must consult with the SCM-MS academic director and obtain approval from the SOM advising office.
