DATE:   September 20, 2001:

TO:          UTD BUSINESS CONSULTANTS

FROM:      Jacqueline Varma              fordpgrm@aol.com            214/503-8626          214/342-2225

RE:               FALL 2001 SESSION

Dear UTD Business Consultants:

First, let me thank you for the considerable patience and understanding that you have shown with the delays this Semester. I believe you’ll agree that the further changes are to your advantage. PLEASE RETAIN THIS MEMO AS YOUR SYLLABUS GUIDE.

The Fall 2001 Semester officially begins NOW. YOUR ORIENTATION IS THROUGH THIS EMAILED MEMO. THERE IS NO ORIENTATION AT UTD THIS SATURDAY. The Ford Program notified the DFW Minority Business Development Council that we will not conduct the Sales Presentation Training Program this Fall.  The DFW Minority Business Development Council had not promoted our Sales Presentation Training Program to its members, due to its other commitments. The Ford Program has to move forward with our UTD Business Consultants.

This Fall, all UTD Consultants will work on a Special Website Project for the $2 million Inner-City Telecommunication Centers Program funded by the US Department of Commerce, WK Kellogg Foundation, EDS, Bank Of America, other local foundations and funders. This is a national model urban technology project to end the science, math and technology divides in our inner-cities by increasing access to real-world science, math and technology projects for low-income youth and their parents.

You will be working in Teams to develop a very exciting Web Site for 6 Inner-City Telecommunication Centers, plus include information and creative links to: EDS, Bank Of America, The WK Kellogg Foundation, the Hoblitzelle Foundation, the Dallas Foundation, and the US Department of Commerce. You must devote at least 3 hours a week to this Web Site Project, according to your individual schedules. You need to schedule at least 1 onsite visit each month to the Telecommunication Center to which you are assigned, and you need to schedule at least 1 onsite visit during the semester to the additional link site [EDS, Bank Of America, The WK Kellogg Foundation, the Hoblitzelle Foundation, the Dallas Foundation, or the US Department of Commerce] to which you are assigned.

** There will be 6 Teams. Each Team will have at least 2 UTD Consults. ALL TEAMS MUST WORK TOGETHER TO ASSURE THAT THERE IS CONSISTENCY OF FORMAT AND STYLE, AND THAT THE WEBSITE IS AN INTEGRATED WHOLE, RATHER THAN 6 INDIVIDUAL WEBSITES MESHED TOGETHER.

NO LATER THAN 5 PM ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2001, EACH UTD CONSULTANT MUST EMAIL ME THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

Ø     Complete the attached Spread Sheet, by providing your major at UTD, home and work phone numbers;

Ø     Determine which Inner-City Telecommunication Center is your preference. A List of the Telecommunication Centers with directions is attached. Each Telecommunication Center is great; all involve driving to the Dallas Southern Sector, but each has great access either through I 75/45South or Stemmons Freeway/I 35 South; and each location provides a safe place for you to work.

Ø     Determine which UTD Consultant with whom you would like to team and work. THERE CAN ONLY BE 2 CONSULTANTS PER TEAM, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 1 TEAM WHICH MAY HAVE 3 MEMBERS, SINCE WE HAVE 13 ENROLLEES IN THIS PROJECT. Don’t worry if you don’t know anyone. The Ford Program will assign if an UTD Consultant has no choice or if too many Consultants choose the same Telecommunication Center; and

Ø     Thoroughly review the attached:

(i)     Project Summary Report, which provides an overview of this national model urban technology project;

(ii) List of Inner-City Telecommunication Centers with directions;

(iii)           Inner-City Telecommunication Centers Fact Sheet; and

(iii) Project PowerPoint Presentation. The Ford Program has outsourced development of our own Ford Program Website around the Graphics used for this PowerPoint Presentation. YOUR WEBSITE MUST BE BUILT AROUND THIS BASIC GRAPHIC THEME, BUT YOU WILL HAVE GREAT LATITUDE. JUST REMEMBER THAT IT IS 1 WEBSITE THAT 6 TEAMS ARE DEVELOPING.

Once again, thank you very much for your patience. I wish you a very exciting Semester working on this Project. Have a good, and safe weekend.
