Going into the Field

Your area of interest may be a park, a wildlife preserve or even your neighborhood. The environment encompasses all of these and each has a unique story to tell. The following materials will be helpful when you go:

• Field book
• Binder clip to keep you notebook pages from blowing around
• Maps
• Pens, pencils, colored pencils
• Field guides (flowers, trees, birds, insects, etc.)
• Camera with appropriate lenses.

Pay particular attention to your well being. Take a cellular phone with you if at all possible. Take someone with you--he or she can at least carry part of your gear! Without fail, let someone know where you are going and when you’ll be back. Dress appropriately:

• Long pants (usually)
• Hat
• Long sleeved shirt
• Boots
• Insect repellent
• Sunscreen
• More water than you think you’ll need.
