g19. Where do you find air pollution?
The layer of air we are most concerned with is the troposphere because it carries our weather. Primary pollution is particles put into the air by natural events or human activities. Polluting materials include carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, volatile organic compounds (hydrocarbons), and suspended particles. Secondary pollution is when primary pollutants react with one another to form new pollutants. Photochemical smog is a mixture of primary and secondary pollutants under the influence of sunlight. The severity and frequency is dependent on local climate, topography and society. If a layer of less dense air traps a layer of more dense air below it, a temperature inversion occurs (thermocline). This does not allow the air to circulate and allow the smog to dissipate.
