In a word (or three), too many people! Visitation has increased 12 times since 1950. Because of this overcrowding, large predators have vanished leaving too much prey, which are damaging vegetation. Air pollution is also affecting our parks; the Grand Canyon's scenic views are affected about 90% of the time. Off shore drilling, cruise ships, and coastal cities deposit mountains of trash wash ashore at Padre Island National Seashore daily. Excessive water use in Los Vegas threatens to shut down Death Valley; and in Florida is drying up the Everglades.
