m15.    How are freshwater and marine environments managed?

Freshwater fish management is designed to dispose of undesirable fish and to increase the populations of fish used for food and sport. To do this, the time of fishing seasons and the size of fish taken are regulated. This strategy builds and stocks reservoirs, ponds, and tanks with game fish; and controls predators, parasites, and disease.

Management of the marine environment isn’t as easy. Shore-hugging species are adversely affected by costal development. Additionally, most of the ocean lies outside the limit of any country's influence and therefore is open to abuse. Since 1907 the number of whales has gone from 4.4 million to 1 million. In 1977 the US stopped all commercial whaling and banned all imports of whale products. Unfortunately, in 1992 Iceland, Norway, Greenland, and Denmark announced their intention to resume commercial whaling with most of the meat exported to Japan.
