Denmark and Sweden burn 50% of their solid waste to produce energy; the U.S. burns 17% of wastes to produce energy. A sanitary landfill is a garbage graveyard. The largest landfill is Fresh Kills on Staten Island. It is as big as 16,000 baseball diamonds, as tall as a 15­story building. Each day 3.8 million liters of contaminated leachate oozes into ground water from Fresh Kills. Within 10 years, half of the U.S. landfills will be closed; within 20, 80% will be closed.
