m76.    What contaminates soil?

If too much water is added to the soil, it leaches the salts from the soil and accumulates them in an area near the plant roots.  It also causes a salty run-off into the watershed. By the time the Colorado River comes from the Rocky Mountains to Mexico, it is too salty to be used for irrigation. Water logging occurs when there is not adequate run-off.  The water accumulates in the topsoil and may lead to concentrations of salt or to root rot.
