Dams and reservoirs provide water and hydroelectric Cause lakes that cover vast areas, uprooting millions of people and destroying habitat. The US has about 1,300 unsafe dams in populated areas.

Since the Civil War, the area around the Everglades has been drained for use in farming, housing, and the like. Half the original Everglades has been lost to development.  Even though the Everglades became a National Park in 1947, massive development north of the Park has cut off much of the water flow, endangering the wildlife.  This has reduced the marshlands by 80% and the bird population by 90% since 1960.
