m86. How can water help feed us?
About
80% of the commercial catch of fish and shellfish per year comes from the oceans
(rather than from farms). About 40 of the 20,000 species of fish are harvested.
The total fish catch has grown, but the per capita fish catch has decreased
because of human population growth. Over-fishing leaves too little breeding
stock. Aquaculture supplies about 10% of the fish and shellfish crop. About 40%
of the oysters, most of the catfish, crayfish and rainbow trout are raised on
farms.
