Welcome to the GEM website...

From the perspective of Ecology, this website explores environmental science through the impact of Mankind and Geology.

Ecology is the study of the interrelationships of organisms and their environments and the patterns these relationships make. The focus is on what’s happening and has happened “out there”, away from classrooms and textbooks. To study in the field, the learner must come to grips with the idea that all sciences are interrelated and that the biotic and abiotic are inseparable from each other. Hence, we look at geology, ecology and mankind in an effort to understand pieces of the biospheric puzzle.

Learning and studying in the field present some challenges. How do you know what is important? How do you know if what you observe is or is not typical? How do you know when you are finished? Hopefully the answer to this third question is that you’re never finished; that the techniques and information remain with you, supporting life long learning. Review these tips before Going into the Field...

About This Site

Gaining knowledge about the environment is a non-linear process. By asking one question you raise a myriad of others. This section is designed in just that manner. By choosing one of the sections (ecology, geology or mankind), you bring up a set of questions. Exploring those questions leads you to other questions designed to show the interrelations of the three topics. Click on the buttons at the left to navigate directly to the following pages:

eco

Flora and fauna are the topics of the questions in this section.

geo

Questions in this section deal with geology, oceanography, the atmosphere, and water.

man

This section is devoted to impacts, both good and bad, that mankind has on the environment.
